I have a 1994 Johnson 150 hp Fast Strike Ranger Classic motor on my boat and I am having trouble gettting the starter to engage every time. When the motor is cold and I turn the starter to the start position, it engages the starter with no problem.

I have tried hitting the side of the starter. I can not seem to find another thread that is explaining the problem just as mine is. My starter is spinning when I turn the key, but it is not engaging with the flywheel.

You NEED to use a thick (8 gauge) jumper wire. If you jump the two larger terminals and it cranks OK it means your starter is OK and your slave solenoid is bad. If you jump the two large terminals and it only sparks or nothing happens, you might have a bad starter motor. If you can crank the engine but it won't start, go HERE. Safety Boats can.

So, I recently changed my battery because it was taking approximately 5 seconds to crank over the engine (I know I shouldn't have kept pushing it, but I needed to get the car to the store to buy the battery) That was 1 week ago. Today, I get in my car and go to start the engine, it doesn't crank, but I can hear the starter spinning.

This video is all about the Bendix gear on a starter motor. This is the gear that rises up and engages with the ring gear around the flywheel. When things go wrong with this gear it can not rise.

What you are doing here is connecting the battery directly to the starter motor, WITHOUT engaging the solenoid. So what should happen is that the starter motor will spin but will not crank the engine. It should sound like a regular electric motor, no gravelly or strange noises. If it does not spin or sounds really bad, have it rebuilt.

If the starter just draws a hug current over 200amps and does not spin then it is stalled/jammed or inernally shorted. If the starter solenoid kicks back each time you activate the starter, then the starter is either stalled is shorted inside . Current will be excessive for this fail and voltage will drop to an illegal value below 10v.

Just be aware that starter will jump pretty good and try to rotate some on the deck when it turns, simply due to the mass of the internals spinning. 1) When people describe a starter trying to turn as a "whine", it make me think the starter is indeed engaged with the flywheel, but unable to turn a locked up engine.

The teeth of the fly wheel got caught just right with the teeth of the starter and they are stuck together. I was just going to pop it loose with a screwdriver, but I thought I better ask first if that's a good idea or not. This is my first electric start outboard and I don't know much about these but I'm trying to learn.

If the starter just spins and does not engage then you have low battery or a stuck 'bendix' on the starter. -Running hot is a separate problem that may happen for any number of easons.

Very happy with that, the whole day I only triggered the spinning sound just once! (Where previously it was one spin per attempt at starting) The interesting part was the only time I did trigger the spinning, it was on a crank where the motor was turning for a second, then it reverted to spinning the starter after about a second.
