However, if you already have a good RAS, it's a great option. Another option I've seen for fret slotting is using the circular saw blade on a table saw. I think the one I saw the video of used a specially-built sled, that used the fret template and indexing mechanism. As I recall, the guy was cranking out fretboards/necks pretty fast with it.

Through years of constant use and clever improvements, they've created the single best tool for hand-cutting fret slots.

You've never felt a miter saw move this freely without looseness.
The fret slotting box hold the blade perpendicular to the fretboard at a perfect right angle.
Clear view of the action Our uncluttered design lets you see and feel the slot being cut.
Set the slot depth to suit your fretwire, and the saw stops cutting when you reach that point.
Work fast with templates Our are made for our miter box: their notches click onto the box's index pin so you can slot an entire board quickly.
Of course, you can use the miter box without templates too.
Helping-hand thumbwheels hold the fretboard, leaving your hands free for fret slotting box />The box is rugged aluminum, 12" 305mm long.
Hex wrenches are included for setting the rollers to fit your saw blade.
Save by ordering a miter box and fret saw together!
Works equally well with our or.
CALIFORNIA PROPOSITION 65 WARNING You might say you don't need and that's true, but once you try how easy is to get 100% cuts 100% right 100% of time then you will know that you just didn't know better!
I had a homemade fretting jig, along with a fret scale ruler, and it worked.
But only to a point!
I always felt that excellent free rocky boxing games words slots were getting out of square by the time I got to the 12th or 14th fret.
So I bought fret slotting box StewMac tool.
Wellit works very well!!
All my slots are now exactly the same depth and are perfectly square to my fretboard centre line!
My only quibble would be to have more detailed instructions to the set-up before your first cut.
I had already cut my fretboard at the nut end, and I work from right to left, so it took me a while to figure out my starting point.
I purchased this tool to properly cut fret slots in jack in the box game xbox first Ukulele build.
The tool is made well but it takes a while too set it up, I had to take the sides off of my jig to get them square to the bottom, But other than that it was in good shape.
I would reccomend this tool.
It works good for trimming binding etc.
Works beautifully and it's a solid piece.
Only 2 minor complaints.
One of the thumb screws was too large for its slot, and I had to use pliers to turn it.
I had to file it down.
The bolt itself was wobbly on one side so I flipped the black rectangular piece over and used the other side of the thread Works fine now.
The little screws that hold it in place now face the inside, but it doesn't inhibit the function of the tool.
Downside was the poor fit of the sliding plastic depth adjusters.
This was totally cured by inserting three layers of copper foil as used for shielding into the base of the slot in the blocks, making a total thickness of 0,008".
Now slackening them off by half a turn allows adjustments to be made without changing the fit or angle of the sawblade.
If the slot was cut.
This miter box works very well for slotting fingerboards.
I do wish it had the ability to easily slot something thicker like a 1 piece Tele style neck.
It's a little pricey, but it will eventually pay for itself.
Making a mistake on a rare exotic or highly figured fingerboard would be very costly.
That said, once I modified it, it does work very well, using the template, fixing fingerboard with thin dbl.
Not sure if this is a design or quality control issue.
Hi Robert, Thank you for sharing your honest feedback with us.

Easy to set up.
I chose the version with the Japanese saw.
I think it is almost as quick to use as a circular saw jig, in that it took me 20 minutes to cut the frets with this and I wasn't in a rush.
OK, you can do it in five on circular saw, but without either, it takes a couple of hours, and that's just marking out.
Tolerance is well within the scope of even the most pedantic guitar maker, and lets face it, that'd be up against some pretty fret slotting box competition, because if you aren't picky, you won't build a good guitar.
I have heard complaints that it isn't easy to set up.
My only gripe is UK customs.
I bought this on an impulse source failing to find pre-slotted fingerboards of the material I wanted.
I purchased the combo kit with the saw; the saw I ordered was the Stew-Mac version, along with the "Fender" scale template.
Overall I'm very impressed with the quality of each of these items.
The template in particular looks like there is no way it could wear out short of outright destruction.
My first fingerboard, of nicely figured maple, was a success.
It took a little while to get the jig set up, but not too bad.
I do have a couple of minor gripes about the design, though.
There is quite a bit of play in the vertical slots that allow adjustment of the parts that hold the bearings.
So the vertical alignment between the bearing faces shifts when you make vertical adjustments.
It makes adjustment an iterative process, between setting the height and re-setting the gap between the two sets of bearings.
I'm not likely to have to do these adjustments very often, so, now that I have it set the way I want, it's not a huge issue.
I have to admit to a few blasphemous utterances during the process, though.
My other beef has to do with the clearance between the work piece and the bottom bearings.
If you set the height to cut deeper than usual, there isn't much clearance to allow you to lift the template off the index pin when moving from slot to slot.
A little bit more clearance, even.
Other than that, it's a nice tool, and I expect that for anyone who is contemplating building more than a couple of guitars it would be a worthwhile investment.
I have held off buying one of these for several years, but after using it, I see I should have purchased it years ago.
After a quick setup, this miter box makes fret slotting a joy.
It's easy to set the fret slot depth, and the two clamps hold the fretboard securely in place while slotting.
I use mine fret slotting box the Japanese fret saw.
I only wish StewMac made a fret scale template in 33.

You've never felt a miter saw move this freely without looseness.
The bearings hold the blade perpendicular to the fretboard at a perfect right angle.
Helping-hand thumbwheels hold the fretboard, leaving your hands free for sawing.
The box is rugged aluminum, 12" 305mm long.
Hex wrenches are included for setting the rollers to fit your saw blade.
Save by ordering a miter box and fret saw together!
Works equally well with our or.
CALIFORNIA PROPOSITION 65 WARNING You fret slotting box say you don't need and that's true, but once you try how easy is to get continue reading cuts 100% right 100% of time then you will know that you just didn't know better!
I had a homemade fretting jig, along with a fret scale ruler, and it worked.
But only to a point!
I always felt that my slots were getting out of square by the time I got to the 12th or 14th fret.
So I bought the StewMac tool.
Wellit works very well!!
All my slots are now exactly the same depth and are perfectly square to my fretboard centre line!
My only quibble would be to have more detailed instructions to the set-up before your first cut.
I had already cut my fretboard fret slotting box the nut end, and I work from right to left, so it took me a while to figure out my starting point.
I purchased this tool to properly cut fret slots in my first Ukulele build.
The little screws that hold it in place now face the inside, but it doesn't inhibit the function click the tool.
I fret slotting box wish it had the ability to easily slot something thicker like a 1 piece Tele style neck.

Easy to set up.
I chose the version with the Japanese saw.
I think it is this web page as quick to use as a circular saw jig, in that it took me 20 minutes to cut the frets with this and Room real boxing android games wasn't in a rush.
OK, you can do it in five on circular saw, but without either, it takes a couple of hours, and that's just marking out.
Tolerance is well within the scope of even the fret slotting box pedantic guitar maker, and lets face it, that'd be up against some pretty stiff competition, because if you aren't picky, you won't build a good guitar.
I have heard complaints that it isn't easy to set up.
My only gripe is UK customs.
I bought this on an impulse after failing to find pre-slotted fingerboards of the material I wanted.
I purchased the combo kit with the saw; the saw Fret slotting box ordered was the Stew-Mac version, along with the "Fender" scale template.
There is quite a bit of play in the vertical fret slotting box that allow adjustment of the parts that hold the bearings.
So the vertical alignment between the bearing faces shifts when you make vertical adjustments.
It makes adjustment an iterative process, between setting the fret slotting box and re-setting the gap between the two sets of bearings.
I use mine with the Japanese fret saw.
I only wish StewMac made a fret scale fret slotting box in 33.
