Had it fallen into the wastebasket at the teller's foot?
Had it been misdirected and credited to someone else's account?
Did a computer gobble it up?
No one knew for sure, but the customer thought he had some protection in the little yellow deposit receipt, which had been stamped by the teller and which he had stuffed into his wallet.
This was proof that the check existed, he believed.
His bank would take one look at the receipt, credit the proper amount to his account, and all would be well.
Castellanos, who presented this hypothetical scenario.
Castellanos is the executive assistant to the New York State Superintendent of Banks.
Under New York law, the little yellow slip, or in some cases the pink slip, serves as proof of deposit when it has been stamped by a teller, provided the deposit consists of cash or one check.
If an error is made, the bank must honor the receipt and credit the account for the amount shown.

In fact, the burden of proof often falls on the customer, particularly when a deposit includes a number of checks, all listed on a single deposit slip.

Because of this perception, bank customers might be less than tolerant when an error does occur.
Knowing what to expect can help, and customers might want to ask their banks about their specific policies.
One way to decrease the possibility of a mistake is to avoid making multiple deposits on a single slip.
